The care of human life and happiness is the first and only legitimate object of good government. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Overview
This course examines the structure, functions, and evolution of the government and political institutions of the United States. We will look at how policies are shaped by social, political, and economic factors. We will explore how our elected representatives are dealing with the serious problems facing American society today.
Additionally, we will periodically examine the role of the media in American politics in order to help you follow the news with a critical eye. You are expected to keep up with current events as they are weaved into each unit we study, and certain assignments will involve making the link between our themes and the news.
This class is a very important course for Seniors. It is an opportunity to prepare for life, particularly civic life beyond high school. We will have a number of projects that have real-world applications; many of these projects reflect situations that you will encounter as engaged citizens. This course involves some lecture, but in this class you will engage in regular discussion, debate, collaboration to solve problems, and a number of case studies. I want you to make informed arguments, defend your positions, consider varying viewpoints, critically question, and analyze the consequences and implications of political decisions.
